First impressions are everything in business. You walk into a meeting, you shake a hand, and you exchange cards. Usually, it is the same 85x55mm rectangle of cardstock everyone else has. But what if you have more to say? What if your story, your services, or your brand cannot be squashed into a tiny 5cm space?
That is exactly the challenge a local Devon business brought to us recently. They needed a way to provide their contact details while also showcasing a mini-menu of their services and a loyalty stamp area. The solution was simple but effective – the folded business card.
At ABC Service, we see a lot of print projects come through our Tavistock workshop. While standard cards are a staple, there is something uniquely satisfying about a well-executed folded card. It is a mini-brochure that fits in a wallet. In this week’s Friday series, we are taking you behind the scenes of how we produce these little powerhouses and why they might be the secret weapon your marketing toolkit is missing.
Why the extra panels make a massive difference
The most obvious benefit of a folded card is the space. By doubling the surface area, you go from two panels to four. This opens up a world of possibilities for growing businesses.
We often find that organisations use this extra "real estate" for:
- Service Lists: If you offer a range of specialities, a standard card can look cluttered. Four panels allow you to list your services clearly with bullet points.
- Appointment Slots: For hair salons, therapists, or garages, the inside of a card is the perfect place to write down the date and time of a client's next visit.
- Loyalty Schemes: "Buy nine, get the tenth free" is a classic for a reason. Having a dedicated grid for stamps inside your business card ensures your customers keep your contact details close at hand.
- Brand Storytelling: Sometimes a logo isn't enough. Use the inside panels to explain your mission statement or show off a high-quality photo of your work.
As we discussed in our guide to premium business cards, the goal is to create something that people don't want to throw away. A folded card feels more substantial, more valuable, and more like a tool than a simple slip of paper.

The technical side, How we ensure a first-class finish
Printing a folded card is not as simple as just "printing on a bigger piece of paper." There is a fair bit of science involved in making sure that the card folds perfectly without the ink cracking or the panels misaligning.
When we handle a project like this in-house at our Tavistock shop, we follow a strict process to ensure the final product is spot on.
Choosing the right stock
For a folded card, weight is vital. We typically recommend a 350gsm or 400gsm silk or uncoated cardstock. If the card is too thin, it feels like a flyer. If it is too thick, the fold can become bulky and won't sit flat in a wallet.
If you are planning to use the card for loyalty stamps or appointment writing, we always suggest an uncoated or "part-laminated" finish. You can have a beautiful matt or gloss lamination on the outside panels to protect the design, while keeping the inside panels raw cardstock so that ink from a pen or stamp doesn't smudge.
The importance of creasing
This is where many DIY or "budget" online printers fail. If you fold a thick piece of card without "creasing" it first, the fibres in the paper will snap. This leads to an ugly, jagged white line along the fold where the ink has cracked off.
At ABC Service, we use a professional creasing machine that applies a precise amount of pressure to create a "hinge" in the card before it is ever folded. This ensures that even with a heavy 400gsm stock and a dark background colour, the fold is clean, sharp, and professional.

Designing for the fold, Avoiding common pitfalls
Designing a four-panel card requires a bit more thought than a standard one. You have to think about the "flow" of information.
- The Front Cover: Keep this simple. Your logo and perhaps a single high-impact image or tagline. This is the "hook."
- The Inside Panels: This is your "content" area. Use it for your service list, your "about us" section, or your appointment grid.
- The Back Cover: This is usually the best place for your core contact details – phone number, email, and website. It makes the information easy to find without even opening the card.
We also have to be very careful with bleed and safe zones. Because the card is being trimmed and then creased, any text or important logos need to be kept at least 3mm away from the edges and the fold line. This prevents anything from being cut off or "lost" in the crease.
If you are not a design expert, don't worry. Our graphic design team handles these technical layouts every day. We can take your ideas and turn them into a print-ready file that looks fantastic on both sides.
Supporting local businesses and the UK-wide community
While we love seeing our local neighbours from Tavistock, Plymouth, and Okehampton walk through our doors, our printing services reach much further. We provide high-quality digital printing with UK-wide delivery, ensuring that businesses from Cornwall to the Highlands can access the same level of care and expertise.
We take our role as a "Responsible Local Partner" seriously. This means being honest about pricing and helping you choose the most sustainable options where possible. For instance, we offer FSC-certified cardstock and sustainable printing methods, as we detailed in our guide for eco-businesses.

A quick takeaway for your next project
Folded business cards are more than just a trend – they are a practical solution for organisations that need to communicate more than just a phone number. By choosing a folded format, you are giving your customers more value and yourself more space to shine.
"A business card is often the only physical reminder a customer has of your meeting. Making it useful – whether through a loyalty scheme or a clear service list – ensures it stays in their wallet rather than the bin." : The ABC Service Print Team.
If you are looking to refresh your branding or need a versatile tool like a folded card, we would love to help. We pride ourselves on a friendly, non-call-centre service where you can speak directly to the specialists doing the work.
Summary Checklist for Folded Cards
- Stock: Aim for 350gsm to 400gsm for a premium feel.
- Finish: Use uncoated inside if you need to write or stamp on it.
- Technical: Always ensure your printer "creases" the cards to avoid cracking.
- Layout: Think of it as a mini-brochure with a clear front, middle, and back.
