Are sub-domains covered by Let's Encrypt certificates?
Let's Encrypt certificates cover all sub-domains by default as long as the sub-domain is mapped to the same hosting account as the root domain. Currently, if an SSL is needed for a sub-domain that's mapped to a different hosting than the root domain, a standard or Pro SSL is needed.
What's the difference between a Standard / Pro SSL and a Lets Encrypt certificate?
Apart from the issuing CA (certificate Authority) being different, the encryption and security provided is exactly the same so in terms of security provided there is no difference.
For large e-commerce sites, you may want to go for a Standard or Pro SSL over Lets Encrypt as the CA will pay will pay warranty compensation for fraud if the certificate is compromised by a hacker whereas Lets Encrypt will not. This is extremely rare occurrence, please bear in mind.
