7 Mistakes You Are Making With Your Cyber Security and How to Protect Your Devon Business

Jul 7, 2026

When you are running a business in a beautiful part of the world like Devon or Cornwall, it is easy to feel a little bit insulated from the chaos of the wider world. We often talk about the "lifestyle" benefit of being based in Tavistock, Plymouth, or Okehampton, the slower pace, the community spirit, and the lack of city smog. However, there is one area where being "local" doesn't provide a shield, and that is the digital world.

In the eyes of a cyber-criminal, a small family run shop in Devon is just as attractive as a multi-national corporation in London. In fact, sometimes we are even more attractive targets because we might not have the massive IT departments that larger companies do.

At ABC Service, we see it every day. We support local homes and businesses with everything from computer repairs to fully managed IT services, and the most heartbreaking calls we get are from business owners who have lost data or money because of a simple, avoidable mistake.

Cyber security doesn't have to be scary or overly technical. It is about making smart choices to protect your hard work. Here are the seven biggest mistakes we see Devon businesses making and, more importantly, how you can fix them today.

1. Thinking "I am too small to be a target"

This is the single biggest misconception we encounter. Many business owners believe that hackers only go after big fish like banks or government agencies. The reality is quite the opposite.

Modern cyber-attacks are rarely personal. Most are automated "bots" that scan the entire internet looking for any open door. They don't care if you are a local solicitor, a boutique hotel, or a freelance graphic designer. If you have a weak password or an unpatched system, they will find you.

According to the UK Government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024, around half of all UK businesses reported a cyber-attack in the last year. For small businesses, the impact can be devastating, often leading to significant downtime or even closure.

The fix, Change your mindset. Assume that your business is a target and build your defences accordingly. A little bit of preparation goes a long way.

2. Skipping Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

If you only take one thing away from this blog, let it be this, enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on everything.

MFA is that extra step where you have to approve a login on your phone or enter a code sent via text. Many people find it a bit of a faff, but it is the single most effective way to stop hackers in their tracks. Even if a criminal manages to guess or steal your password, they can't get into your account without that second "factor" on your physical device.

Shockingly, recent data shows that over 50% of UK small businesses still don't use MFA for their staff. This is like leaving your front door locked but keeping the key in the lock on the outside.

The fix, Go through your most important accounts today, email, banking, and social media, and turn on MFA. If you are not sure how, our team at ABC Service can help walk you through the setup for your whole office.

3. Reusing the same password for every account

We get it. It is hard to remember fifty different passwords. Using "Fluffy123" for your email, your Amazon account, and your business banking seems like a great way to stay organised.

The problem is that if one of those services (like a random shopping site) gets breached, hackers will immediately try that same email and password combination on every other major site. This is called "credential stuffing," and it is incredibly effective.

This is where we differ from some advice given but have found this to be sound.

1) Make your password LONG – Fluffy123! is too short try Fluffy_Doggo_Devon123!
2) Don't have lots of online accounts, if you don't use a company any more or don't intend to, CLOSE THE ACCOUNT DOWN. This ensures that there can only be a limited number of places your details can be accessed.
3) Have 2 or 3 completely different passwords for example…all your high security stuff could be "Digital_Personal-stuff-2468!" whereas the general shopping sites could be "My_shopping_site1234!"

Whilst there is a lot of advice out there to use Password Managers etc unless they are locked down and completely secured they too can and HAVE been breached in the past! So be mindful!

4. Neglecting staff training and awareness

You can have the most expensive firewall in Devon, but it won't help if a member of your team clicks a link in a dodgy email and hands over their login details.

Phishing, those fake emails that look like they are from Microsoft, HMRC, or even a colleague, remains the most common way businesses get breached. These emails have become incredibly sophisticated, often using "urgent" language to make you act without thinking.

"Cyber security is not just a technical issue; it is a human one. Your team is your first line of defence, but only if they know what to look for." Jack, ABC Service.

The fix, Talk to your team. You don't need a three-day course; just a regular ten-minute chat about the latest scams can make a huge difference. Encourage a "no-blame" culture where if someone does click a link, they feel comfortable telling you immediately so you can fix it before things get worse.

5. Ignoring those annoying "Update Your Software" notifications

We have all done it. You are in the middle of a busy day, and a little box pops up saying "Windows Update" or "Update Available for Adobe." You click "Remind me tomorrow" and then keep doing that for three weeks.

Those updates aren't just there to add new features or change the colour of a button. Most of the time, they contain "patches" for security holes that hackers have recently discovered. Every day you wait to update is another day that door is left wide open.

As a Microsoft Partner, we always stress the importance of keeping your operating systems and applications current. It is one of the easiest ways to keep your business running smoothly.

The fix, Enable automatic updates on all your devices. If you manage a team, you might want to look into managed IT services Devon providers (like us!) who can handle all those updates in the background so your staff don't even have to think about it.

6. Having no backup plan (or a broken one)

Imagine you arrive at your office in Plymouth or Tavistock tomorrow morning and every single file on your computer is gone. Your invoices, your customer list, your project files, all vanished.

This happens more than people think, whether it is due to a hardware failure, a fire, or a "ransomware" attack where hackers lock your files and demand money to release them. A backup is your "get out of jail free" card.

However, a backup is only a backup if it actually works. We have seen businesses who thought they were backing up to a USB stick for years, only to find the stick had failed months ago and they hadn't checked it.

The fix, Follow the 3-2-1 rule. Have 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media (like a local drive and the cloud), with 1 copy kept off-site. Cloud backups are fantastic because they happen automatically and are stored safely away from your physical office.

7. Relying on "Free" antivirus alone

Free antivirus software is great for a home computer used for browsing the news, but it is rarely enough for a business. Modern threats are much more complex than the "viruses" of ten years ago. Today, we have to deal with spyware, ransomware, and file-less attacks that free software often misses.

Furthermore, business-grade security software allows you to see the status of every computer in your office from one central dashboard. If a staff member’s laptop in Okehampton catches something, you will know about it immediately, rather than finding out when the whole network goes down.

The fix, Invest in professional "Endpoint Protection." It is surprisingly affordable and offers much better peace of mind. We can recommend and install solutions that are tailored to your specific business needs.
