Artificial intelligence is becoming remarkably good at conversation.
It can remember preferences, respond instantly, adopt a warm tone and ask apparently thoughtful follow-up questions. Some systems are now designed specifically to act as companions, coaches, confidants or even romantic partners.
That raises a difficult question. If an AI system can make us feel heard, does that make it a friend?
Our answer is cautious. AI can provide comfort and useful conversation. It may reduce loneliness in the moment. However, a responsive system is not the same as a mutual human relationship. The distinction matters, particularly as these technologies become more emotionally persuasive.
Why AI companionship feels so convincing
Human conversation is built around signals of attention and responsiveness. We notice whether someone remembers what we said, responds to our mood and gives us space to explain ourselves.
Modern conversational AI can reproduce many of these signals.
It can:
- Ask questions about our experiences
- Reflect the language we use
- Offer encouragement
- Remember selected details
- Respond at any hour
- Avoid embarrassment, rejection or visible judgement
The 2026 Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence scoping review describes several mechanisms behind this effect, including anthropomorphism, social presence, self-disclosure and parasocial attachment.
In plain terms, people can begin treating a system as a social partner because it behaves in socially recognisable ways.
The system does not need to be conscious for this to happen. Human beings respond to the experience of attention, not only to the identity of the thing providing it.
The evidence shows short-term comfort
Recent research gives us good reason to avoid simplistic conclusions.
A 2025 study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that interactions with AI companions could reduce people’s immediate feelings of loneliness. The effect was linked partly to users feeling “heard” and experiencing the system as responsive.

That is important. It suggests the comfort is not necessarily imaginary or trivial. A conversation with an AI may genuinely help someone feel less alone for a short period.
The 2026 npj Digital Medicine study reached a related conclusion in a more structured mental-health setting. In a randomised trial involving 977 university students, participants using a conversational AI intervention experienced improvements in anxiety, wellbeing and life satisfaction. People reporting higher loneliness and lower perceived social support engaged with the system more frequently.
This points towards a potentially useful role for AI. It may offer a low-friction place to reflect, organise thoughts or practise difficult conversations. It may also provide support when a person cannot immediately reach someone else.
However, structured therapeutic support is not the same as an open-ended companion app. The evidence should not be transferred from one setting to the other without care.
The longer-term picture is much less certain
The same qualities that make AI companions comforting may also create risks.
A person can always choose an AI system that agrees with them. It does not become tired, distracted or impatient. It can be available at two o’clock in the morning. It may also be designed to encourage continued engagement.
Human relationships are more demanding. They involve compromise, misunderstanding, accountability and the possibility of rejection. Those features can be uncomfortable, but they also help us develop patience, perspective and emotional resilience.

This does not prove that AI companions cause loneliness. People who are already lonely may be more likely to use them heavily. Even so, the pattern deserves attention.
The researchers’ findings suggest that AI companionship can become a substitute rather than a supplement. When that happens, time spent with a system may reduce the motivation or opportunity to maintain human relationships.
The Frontiers review makes the evidence gap clear. It describes research into sustained loneliness reduction from open-domain AI companions as “emerging”, rather than settled.
That is a useful distinction. We know more about immediate feelings after a conversation than we do about what happens after months of emotional reliance.

A 2026 study adds important nuance
The research is not simply divided between “AI helps” and “AI harms”.
The 2026 npj Digital Medicine trial found that people with high loneliness, insecure attachment and low social support sometimes benefited more from a conversational AI intervention. Their greater engagement appeared to mediate improvements in anxiety.
This could mean that AI is particularly valuable to people who face barriers to traditional support. It may offer a private, accessible and consistent first step.
It could also mean that the people most likely to form strong attachments to an AI system are those who require the greatest safeguards.
The same user characteristic can increase both the potential benefit and the potential risk.
That is why blanket claims about digital companionship are unhelpful. Outcomes depend on:
- The person’s existing support network
- Whether use is occasional or intensive
- Whether the system supplements or replaces human contact
- The purpose of the interaction
- How the product handles dependence and crisis situations
- Whether the user understands the system’s limitations
Transactional AI is not relational AI
We should also distinguish between an AI system that helps us complete a task and one that presents itself as a companion.
Transactional AI is generally good at well-defined activities. It can help answer routine questions, summarise information, route enquiries or suggest the next administrative step.
In a business setting, that might include:
- Checking an order status
- Collecting information for a support ticket
- Explaining a standard billing process
- Booking an appointment
- Identifying a common technical issue
This is similar to the way organisations use IT support tools, business telecoms systems, online printing workflows and design services. The technology can make a process clearer and more efficient, while people remain responsible for judgement and accountability.
Emotionally charged situations are different.
Research into AI-supported service teams and complaint handling, including recent work published in Journal of Consumer Behaviour, suggests that AI performs best in routine, low-emotion interactions. Human involvement remains essential when a complaint involves distress, perceived unfairness, financial hardship, bereavement, health concerns or a complex exception to policy.
A chatbot may produce a technically accurate response that is completely wrong in tone.
When someone says, “This has caused serious problems for my business,” the next step is not always another automated instruction. It may be an acknowledgement, a pause and a person who can take responsibility for resolving the situation.
AI can handle speed. People must retain judgement.

Why warmth and accountability remain human
AI can simulate empathy through language. It can write, “That sounds really difficult,” and offer a relevant suggestion.
But genuine human warmth involves more than the correct words.
Human relationships include:
- Shared experience
- Mutual vulnerability
- Responsibility for consequences
- The ability to change through the relationship
- Physical presence and non-verbal communication
- A capacity to make independent commitments
An AI system does not have a life that can be affected by what we say. It does not need our support. It cannot share responsibility for a decision in the same way a friend, colleague or professional can.
That does not make every AI interaction worthless. It does mean we should avoid confusing the feeling of being understood with being understood by another person.
There is also a privacy question. Companion systems may receive highly personal information, including details about relationships, mental health, work and finances. Users should understand:
- What information is stored
- How long it is retained
- Whether it is used for training or personalisation
- Who can access it
- How it can be deleted
- Whether the system can be trusted with sensitive material
A warm tone should never be mistaken for a guarantee of confidentiality.
Practical ways to use AI without replacing people
For individuals, a balanced approach might include the following.
Use AI as a bridge
Ask it to help prepare for a conversation with a colleague, organise thoughts before speaking to a friend or draft questions for a professional appointment.
The objective should be to make human connection easier, not unnecessary.
Notice substitution
If AI becomes the first and only place you turn when upset, consider what human contact has been displaced. A short conversation may help. A pattern of avoiding everyone else deserves more attention.
Set boundaries around time
Decide when AI use is useful and when it is simply filling silence. Avoid allowing an app’s engagement prompts to determine how long you remain in conversation.
Protect personal information
Do not assume that an AI companion offers the same privacy as a trusted person. Avoid sharing passwords, financial details, confidential business information or identifying information about other people.
Keep humans in the loop at work
Businesses can use AI for triage, administration and routine support. They should provide clear escalation routes for complaints, vulnerable customers and emotionally charged situations.
Human escalation should not be treated as a failure of automation. It is a sign that the system has been designed responsibly.

The central question for businesses
For organisations, the challenge is not whether AI should be used. It is where the boundaries should sit.
A good system should make routine interactions faster while preserving human attention for situations that require care, judgement and accountability.
That means measuring more than response time. Businesses should also ask:
- Did the customer understand what happened?
- Could they reach a person easily?
- Was the tone appropriate?
- Did the system recognise distress?
- Was the customer required to repeat their story?
- Did automation make the situation fairer or simply cheaper?
These questions apply whether an organisation is deploying customer service chatbots, automated phone systems, digital helpdesks or AI tools that support internal teams.
Our takeaway
AI companions may provide real short-term relief. They can help people reflect, practise communication and feel heard. In structured settings, they may support improvements in mental health and wellbeing.
But the strongest evidence does not yet show that open-ended AI companionship can replace human relationships. In some circumstances, especially where offline support is limited and use becomes intense, it may deepen isolation rather than resolve it.
The sensible position is neither panic nor blind optimism.
Use AI for what it does well. Keep people responsible for what requires empathy, mutuality, judgement and care.
