The Tech Challenges of Working Remotely and How to Solve Them

Jul 27, 2021

There’s no debate that the global pandemic has had a damaging impact on various sectors of society. However, amidst the harmful changes the past events of the last year has brought, none can deny that the previous year’s events have also shed light on the benefits of working from home.

Remote work has long existed before the pandemic, but it has become more popular than ever, opening conversions on the necessity of physically reporting to work and the benefits of turning to telecommunication applications.

Remote Work is Good For Business

The pandemic may have forced companies to let their employees work remotely, but even if the world goes back to normal, it doesn’t seem like the trend of working from home will go anywhere.

Employees aren’t just the only ones benefiting from remote work—employees themselves have several advantages to enjoy thanks to the possibility of working from home! No matter the size of your company or the industry you belong in, your business can gain a lot from the global work movement.

Although the rush to provide employees access to the tools they need for working from home was less than pleasant. Once things have settled down, employees have realised just how much more productive and focused their teams could be thanks to the flexibility in the workplace.

Remote work is undoubtedly advantageous to employees and employers alike! However, even with that said, it doesn’t mean that working from home is a perfect alternative to the traditional workplace, nor is it an alternative that’s free from problems.

The IT Issue

Just like working at an office, remote work has its own challenges. The main problem with working from home is that employees work from their homes, a completely different environment from the standard office.

Although a personal workspace does allow for more comfort and flexibility, it can be more challenging for some to remain productive, manage their time, and communicate clearly with each other. These are all sound concerns that must be addressed, but perhaps one of the most serious problems that many remote workers and their employers face is the trouble with technology.

It would be safe to say that many companies weren’t prepared for the transition to remote work, much less the provision of IT support through the new work environment.

IT support used to be easier since all of the employees were under one roof and connected to a single network, but that’s no longer the case. With the team scattered across different networks, providing technical assistance has been trickier, affecting overall productivity and your business’s vulnerability to cyber threats.

Some of the most pressing problems employers face when it comes to supporting remote workers include:

Keeping Devices and Software Up-To-Date

Having current security updates and patches is crucial to maintaining the security of your company’s network and the protection of its data. Issuing company-owned equipment to remote employees, not to mention the use of their personal devices, adds a security risk that could cost you your business.

Securing Company Devices

With the rising number of cyber threats today, it’s essential now more than ever to protect your data from the threat of attacks. Since your employees work separately, it’s more difficult to ensure your company’s security.

Maintain Good Communication

Having a clear line of communication is essential, primarily since you all work apart from each other. Clear and constant contact allows you to maintain camaraderie and collaboration, but several factors can affect how you and your employees exchange information.

Conclusion

Supporting remote workers is undoubtedly much more challenging, but it is possible! No remote work environment can be truly ideal without the necessary IT support. As such, you’ll need to employ the required IT security and compliance policies by working with a trusted company offering IT support services. With proper IT support, your business can grow and thrive beyond expectations!
