Keeping your PC running efficiently
- Keep your computer updated: Make sure to regularly check for software updates and install them. Updates often include important security fixes and can help your computer run more efficiently and smoothly.
- Windows 8.1 was officially discontinued as of January this year so, if you haven’t done already it really is a good time to upgrade to Windows 10 or even better a Windows 11 machine. Don’t worry, Windows 8.1 will continue to work as normal it just means that Microsoft have announced they are no longer releasing security updates for it which in the long run can pose a security risk.
- Back up your data: It’s always a good idea to regularly back up your important files and documents. You can use an external hard drive, memory stick or a cloud-based service like OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox. Do ensure that once you have backed up the data you unplug the external hard drive or memory stick, don’t leave it in the computer. You can leave your cloud backup running all the time so it performs live updates.
- Protect your computer from viruses and malware: Install antivirus software and keep it updated. Be cautious when downloading files or clicking on links from unknown sources. We personally sell an antivirus called ABC Guard which is powered by Emsisoft.
- Uninstall programs you don’t use: If you have programs on your computer that you don’t use anymore, uninstall them. This can free up space on your hard drive and help your computer run more efficiently.
- Use a surge protector: Protect your computer and other electronic devices from power surges by using a surge protector. This can help prevent damage to your equipment. People don’t think about this but it is also really good to put your Router on this as well including your ONT (If you have full fibre) or the like….remember lightning doesn’t just strike the power lines it can also strike phone lines and satellite dishes too. You can generally purchase these at your local electrical store.
- Take breaks: It’s important to take regular breaks when using your computer for extended periods of time. This can help prevent eye strain and other health problems including the impact it has on mental health.
- Edge or Chrome Pop-Up: It has become quite common place for individuals to accept desktop notifications from websites however, some websites have been popping up with security issues and when clicked on is bringing up a web page on your browser which goes full screen (hiding any means of exiting it) and showing warnings, saying to ring a number to remove all the viruses you have etc….do not ring the number and do not panic! ALT+F4 will immediately close this…if not just press and hold your power button on your device until all the lights go off. Then boot it back up, this scam is just a website pop-up….once you have done this still do a full scan with you’re antivirus for peace of mind 😊
- So many antivirus programs: Aaaahhhh! We have seen a number of devices with MULTIPLE antivirus…please DO NOT do this…the poor machine is having to deal with multiple programs all scrambling for any viruses and are all scanning your files….imagine 4 different rugby teams on the pitch at once trying to get the one ball….what a pile up that would be!
- Is it me….or is it getting hot in here: The weather is (hopefully) hot and so is the inside of your device. We have seen a few devices now which have died from heat exhaustion…yes…just like our furry friends our devices can do the same especially if they are choking due to hair, dust, fluff etc. It is highly recommended to give your PC a yearly service to be cleaned up (internally) and this will help it to run cooler for you. We have actually had a few devices that, due to layers of dirt and dust internally have overheated and given up the ghost.
*Woof* I’m baaaccckkk! *Woof*
I know right, I cannot believe I was dropped from here, some people showed real concern for my well-being and even put in complaints as to why I wasn’t in the magazine! I had a woof at my human to make sure I was back in here again! So much has happened, the humans have cleared space in the window for me to sit and admire people as they walk by…yes I know I am fabulous so feel free to pet me with your eyes whilst I sit or lay there, I am still loving my carrots (hint hint)…I did scare my human the other month and I had to spend a day with my doggie doctors (I do love them there they are very kind to me) I was very poorly as I had eaten something toxic…I just don’t know what it was everything tasted good to me and the humans seemed to not know either…but don’t worry I am all okay now 😊 I have my own ABC Service lanyard too!
