Behind the Business – 7 Mistakes You’re Making with Your Premium Business Cards

Jul 24, 2026

We’ve all been there. You’re at a networking event in Devon, maybe a bustling breakfast meeting in Plymouth or a trade show up in London, and someone hands you a business card. Within seconds, you’ve subconsciously judged their entire operation based on that tiny piece of card. Is it flimsy? Is the text so small you need a magnifying glass? Is the logo a bit blurry around the edges?

At ABC Service, we see hundreds of designs pass through our printers every month. We take great pride in our in-house digital printing here in Tavistock, where we help businesses across the UK turn their ideas into tangible, professional tools. But even with the best printers in the world, a card is only as good as the thought put into its design and specifications.

In this week’s "Behind the Business" series, we’re stepping away from the IT workbench and into the print room. We want to share the seven most common mistakes we see people making with their premium business cards – and how you can avoid them to ensure your first impression is spot on.

1. Choosing flimsy card stock

There is nothing that undermines a "premium" brand faster than a card that feels like a scrap of paper. If your card bends or creases the moment it hits someone’s palm, it sends a message that you might cut corners in other areas of your business, too.

In the UK, the standard for a quality business card usually starts at 350gsm (grams per square metre). At ABC Service, we often recommend moving up to a 400gsm artboard for that extra bit of "thump" when it hits the table. We offer a variety of media types, from standard silk to eco-friendly Kraft and even textured Gesso for a truly artisan feel.

Our advice – Never settle for anything less than 350gsm if you want to be taken seriously. A heavier card feels more substantial, stays in better condition in a wallet, and simply feels more "premium" to the touch.

2. The dreaded wall of text

We understand the temptation. You want to tell everyone about your fifteen different services, your three office locations, your five social media handles, and your personal mobile number. But a business card is 85mm x 55mm – it isn't a brochure.

When you clutter a card with too much information, the recipient’s eye doesn’t know where to land. The most important details – your name and how to contact you – get lost in the noise. White space is your friend. It allows your logo and key details to breathe, making the card look more modern and professional.

If you find yourself struggling to fit everything on, it might be time to chat with our graphic design team. We specialise in creating layouts that are clean, impactful, and easy to read at a glance.

3. Using low-resolution graphics

This is perhaps the most heartbreaking mistake we see. A client sends over a beautiful design, but when we zoom in, the logo is pixelated. This usually happens when a "web-ready" logo (72dpi) is used for printing (which requires 300dpi).

On a screen, a low-res logo might look okay, but our high-definition digital printers will pick up every jagged edge and blurry curve. It makes the final product look amateurish, regardless of how much you spent on the card stock.

"Your business card is often the only thing left behind after a meeting – make sure it carries the weight of your reputation." – Brett, Director at ABC Service.

Always ensure your logos and images are high-resolution vector files or 300dpi JPEGs/PDFs. If you aren’t sure if your files are up to scratch, we are always happy to check your artwork before we hit the "print" button.

4. Ignoring the standard UK size

Innovation is great, but sometimes "standard" is standard for a reason. In the UK and Europe, the standard business card size is 85mm x 55mm.

We sometimes see designs come in that are square, extra-long, or based on the slightly different US size (which is 3.5 x 2 inches). While a unique shape can be a talking point, it can also be a nuisance. Standard wallets, card holders, and office rolodexes are all built for 85x55mm. If your card doesn’t fit, it’s far more likely to end up in the bin rather than in a safe place.

We do offer folded business cards for those who need more space (85x110mm folded to 85x55mm), which gives you four panels to work with while still fitting perfectly into a standard wallet.

5. Neglecting the finish

If you’ve invested in a great design and heavy card stock, don’t trip at the finish line by skipping the lamination. Lamination isn't just about looks; it’s about durability. An unlaminated silk card can easily scuff or pick up fingerprints, especially if it has a dark background colour.

We offer three main types of lamination at ABC Service:

  • Gloss: Bright and punchy, great for making colours pop.
  • Matte: Elegant and sophisticated, giving a smooth, non-reflective finish.
  • Soft-Touch: This is the ultimate premium feel – it feels almost like velvet or peach skin.

Adding a lamination protects the ink and ensures your card looks as fresh six months from now as it did the day it was printed. It’s a small extra cost that makes a massive difference to the perceived value of your brand.

6. The missing call to action

What do you want the person to do once they have your card? Call you? Visit your website? Book a demo?

A premium business card should be more than just a data dump of your contact info; it should be a tool for engagement. We’ve seen a huge rise in the use of QR codes on cards recently. A neatly placed QR code on the back can take someone directly to your LinkedIn profile, a specific landing page, or even your digital business card.

It’s a simple way to bridge the gap between physical networking and your digital presence. Just make sure the QR code is large enough to scan easily but doesn't dominate the entire design!

7. Leaving the back of the card blank

Think of the back of your business card as free advertising space. Leaving it blank is a missed opportunity. You’ve already paid for the card and the delivery – why not use both sides?

You don't have to fill it with text. You could use it for:

  • A bold version of your logo.
  • A shortlist of your core services (e.g., IT Support, Printing, Telecoms).
  • A powerful testimonial or your company tagline.
  • A "thank you" or a space for the recipient to jot down a quick note.

By using both sides, you keep the front clean and professional while still providing all the necessary context on the reverse. Our in-house printing team can handle double-sided jobs with ease, ensuring perfect alignment every time.

Problem – Solution, Business Card Edition

Problem: "My business cards look great on screen, but they feel 'cheap' when I hand them out."
Solution: Switch to a 400gsm artboard with a matte or soft-touch lamination. This adds weight and a professional texture that immediately changes the recipient's perception.

Problem: "I have too much information to fit on a standard card, but I don't want it to look cluttered."
Solution: Consider a folded business card. This gives you double the surface area (four panels) while folding down to the standard 85x55mm size. It’s perfect for price lists, appointment times, or detailed service descriptions.

Problem: "I'm worried about the environmental impact of printing thousands of cards."
Solution: We offer sustainable options, including recycled Kraft card stock. We can also print in smaller batches (as few as 20 cards) to prevent waste if your details change frequently.

Summary and Takeaway

Your business card is a silent ambassador for your organisation. When it’s done right, it builds trust and starts conversations. When it’s done wrong, it can quietly turn potential clients away.

To recap, the best way to ensure your cards are working for you is to:

  • Stick to a substantial weight (350gsm+).
  • Keep the design clean and focused.
  • Use high-resolution assets.
  • Stick to standard UK dimensions.
  • Add a protective lamination for that premium feel.
  • Include a clear next step for the recipient.
  • Make use of both sides of the card.

Whether you are a local business in Tavistock or Okehampton, or a larger organisation looking for UK-wide print delivery, we are here to help. We don't just print your files; we act as a responsible partner to ensure the final product is something you are proud to hand over.
