TIPS AND TRICKS, SECURITY ONLINE

We have a number of tips and tricks for being online to help keep you safe and secure.

The big discussion at the moment we are having with a number of clients, especially businesses is around security. There is a number of scams doing the rounds, whether this be via text, phone or email.

Just a reminder that Microsoft, BT, TalkTalk, HSBC, TSB and the rest will NEVER call you to say you have a problem with your PC or device and that they want access to fix it. If you ever get these calls hang up. If you get the ones where they are threatening to cut you off, again, hang up and leave the phone for a short period of time. Additionally, there can be scam emails such as a Morrisons one that has done the rounds saying you can win a £500 voucher, when going through it, it asks if you have a Paypal account for you to login to be entered into the chance of winning. Don’t do it!

We are noticing a number of people are not thinking of their security online, especially when it comes to Social Media accounts. We highly recommend adjusting your settings on Facebook to friends only and any contact information such as email or phone numbers set to “Only Me” meaning that only you can see your contact details and nobody else. You can also do this with your date of birth as well.

When posting online be extra-vigilant of what you are posting and where you are posting. For example there has been a number of “perfectly innocent” social media posts going around where it asks you to tag friends and fill out things such as favourite movie, favourite animal, your nickname as a kid etc etc….what people are forgetting by doing these fun little posts with friends and family is that if these posts are not “locked down” to only friends and family (and your mate might have all their account as public) every man and his dog can now see that information….which, when you think about it, they cover the security questions that are asked by companies to help secure your online accounts.
