Small but Mighty, The Versatility of A5 Boards and Signs

Jun 18, 2026

When it comes to signage, we often think about the big stuff: massive banners over high streets or giant shopfront letters. But here at ABC Service, we’ve noticed that sometimes it’s the smaller additions that make the biggest impact on a customer's experience.

Our A5 Boards and Signs are the perfect example of "small but mighty." Measuring 148 x 210mm, they are exactly half the size of an A4 Board, making them compact enough to fit on a cluttered desk or a busy cafe table while still being large enough to carry a clear, professional message.

Whether you're looking for a durable metal sign for an outdoor trail or a lightweight foam board for your next event, these little powerhouses are incredibly versatile. Let’s dive into why A5 might just be the perfect size for your next project.

Portability Meets Professionalism

One of the best things about A5 signage is how incredibly portable it is. If you're a business owner who attends trade shows, markets, or pop-up events, you know that space is at a premium. Lugging around giant boards is a chore, but a stack of A5 signs fits easily into a backpack or a small crate.

Despite their size, they don't sacrifice professionalism. Because we use the same high-end tech for our A5 boards as we do for our massive wide-format banners, the print quality is fantastic. We use a Konica Minolta production machine that prints at a staggering 2400dpi, ensuring that even the smallest text is crisp and easy to read.

"A well-placed small sign can guide a customer through a journey just as effectively as a large one, often with more subtlety and style." – The ABC Service Print Team

Choosing Your Material, Foamex vs Dibond

Not all signs are created equal, and choosing the right material is key to making sure your sign lasts. At ABC Service, we offer three main options for our A5 boards:

3mm and 5mm Foamex

Foamex is a lightweight, rigid PVC foam board. It’s the "all-rounder" of the sign world.

  • 3mm Foamex is very light and cost-effective, perfect for temporary displays or indoor use.
  • 5mm Foamex offers that extra bit of rigidity. If you’re leaning your sign against a product or mounting it on a wall, that extra 2mm makes a surprising difference in how sturdy it feels.

3mm Dibond Metal

If you need something that can survive a British winter (or just a very busy bar top), Dibond is the way to go. It consists of two thin sheets of aluminium with a solid composite core. It’s rust-proof, incredibly strong, and won't warp or crack over time. It gives a premium, contemporary look that’s hard to beat for permanent signage.

Smart Ways to Use A5 Signs

We’ve seen our customers use these boards in some brilliant ways. Because they are so affordable: starting at just £5.00: you can afford to be creative.

1. The QR Code Hero

In the digital age, the "Scan to Order" or "Follow Us" QR code is everywhere. An A5 board is the perfect size for this. It’s large enough for a phone camera to pick up the code from a distance but small enough to sit neatly on a table without getting in the way of the dinner plates.

2. Tabletop Cafe Menus

If you have a rotating list of specials or a drinks menu, an A5 double-sided board is a great choice. It stands up well in a holder and can be wiped clean if you opt for our gloss or matt lamination.

3. Desk Nameplates and Office Signage

For growing businesses, A5 signs make excellent desk nameplates or directional signs for meeting rooms. They look far more permanent and professional than a piece of paper taped to a door!

4. Event Table Plans

Planning a wedding or a big corporate gala? A5 boards are often used for individual table numbers or "Reserved" signs. They fit perfectly into the aesthetic of a decorated table without blocking the view of the guests sitting opposite each other.

Customisation, The Finishing Touches

A sign is only as good as its design and finish. We don’t just print your file and send it out; we offer several ways to make it truly yours:

  • Lamination: Adding a laminate layer protects the print from scratches and UV fading. Gloss gives a vibrant, shiny finish, while matt offers a sophisticated, non-reflective look.
  • Rounded Corners: For a small extra fee, we can round off the corners. This not only looks great but also removes sharp edges: something that’s particularly useful if the signs are being handled frequently by customers.
  • Double-Sided Printing: If your sign is going in the middle of a table or hanging in a window, why waste the back? We can print on both sides so your message is seen from every angle.
  • Graphic Design Service: Not sure how to make your sign pop? Our in-house graphic design team in Tavistock can help you create a layout that’s eye-catching and perfectly aligned with your brand.

Local Roots, National Reach

While we love supporting our local community in Tavistock, Plymouth, and Okehampton, we aren't limited by geography. All of our printing is done right here in our workshop on West Street, but we ship our A5 boards and signs to businesses across the entire UK.

When you order from us, you aren't dealing with a faceless call centre. You’re working with a team of specialists who care about the final product. We even offer a fast-track 2-3 working day turnaround if you're in a pinch!
