The Ultimate Guide to 1991, Everything You Need to Know About the Year Modern Tech Was Born

Jul 20, 2026

If we were to point to a single year that completely transformed the way we live, work, and communicate, 1991 would be right at the top of the list. Here at ABC Service, we often look back at this era with a sense of wonder. It wasn’t just the year of Bryan Adams and neon windbreakers; it was the year the world truly connected.

From the public launch of the World Wide Web to the birth of the Linux kernel, 1991 provided the building blocks for the digital tools we use today. Whether you are a business owner in Tavistock or a creative professional elsewhere in the UK, the tech milestones of 1991 are the reason you can read this blog, send a secure email, or manage your business operations from a laptop.

In this first instalment of our "Tech Through the Ages" series, we are taking a trip down memory lane to explore the innovations that defined 1991 and why they still matter to your organisation today.

The Web moves from the lab to the living room

The most significant event of 1991: and perhaps the last century: was the public launch of the World Wide Web. While the Internet had existed in various forms for decades, it was mostly the playground of academics and the military.

On 6 August 1991, Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist at CERN, posted a summary of the WorldWideWeb project on several public newsgroups. As he famously wrote at the time:

“The WorldWideWeb (WWW) project aims to allow links to be made to any information anywhere.”

This wasn’t just a new way to share data; it was a revolution in accessibility. It introduced the world to HTML (the language of the web), HTTP (the protocol), and URLs (the addresses). At ABC Service, we see the legacy of this every day through our UK-based web hosting and domain services. Back in 1991, having a website was a dream; today, it is the heartbeat of every SME we support across Devon and Cornwall.

Linux and the power of community-driven software

While the Web was making headlines, another quiet revolution was starting in Helsinki. A young student named Linus Torvalds decided to build his own operating system kernel. He famously announced it on a newsgroup in August 1991, describing it as "just a hobby, won’t be big and professional."

History, of course, had other plans. That "hobby" became the Linux kernel, the foundation for the most robust and secure operating systems in the world. Today, Linux powers everything from the servers running our Managed IT services to the Android phones in our pockets.

The birth of Linux proved that collaborative, open-source development could rival the biggest software giants. It’s a philosophy we deeply respect at ABC Service: using the right tools for the job, whether they are open-source or proprietary, to ensure our clients' businesses run smoothly and securely.

Keeping things private with PGP encryption

In an era where cyber security is a top priority for every organisation, it is fascinating to look back at 1991 and the release of PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Created by Phil Zimmermann, PGP was the first widely available "military-grade" encryption software for the public.

Zimmermann released it for free to help people protect their digital privacy. At the time, the US government was so concerned about the strength of this encryption that they even launched a criminal investigation into its export.

Today, the principles of public-key encryption that PGP popularised are what keep your business emails and bank transactions safe. Security is a cornerstone of our IT support for businesses, and we owe a lot to the pioneers of 1991 who fought to make privacy a standard feature of the digital age.

The dawn of digital creativity and business software

1991 was also a banner year for the software that empowers modern businesses to be creative and efficient.

  • Adobe Premiere 1.0: Released for the Macintosh, this was one of the first non-linear digital video editing programmes. It moved video editing from expensive hardware suites onto the desktop, paved the way for modern digital marketing, and helped our Graphic Design team eventually flourish.
  • Visual Basic 1.0: Microsoft released Visual Basic in May 1991. It allowed developers to create Windows applications using a "drag and drop" interface. This dramatically lowered the barrier for businesses to create their own custom software solutions.

These releases marked a shift in how we work. Instead of needing a massive budget and a specialised studio, businesses could start producing professional-grade content and software in-house.

The Super Nintendo and the 16-bit revolution

It wasn’t all work and no play in 1991. For many of us, 1991 was the year of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) launch in North America. Following its earlier Japanese release, it brought iconic characters like Mario and Link into vibrant 16-bit colour.

Beyond the fun, the SNES represented a massive leap in processing power and graphic capability. It showed the world what was possible when consumer technology became truly powerful and affordable. Interestingly, we still see a lot of love for this era today: we even offer Nintendo-themed wrapping and printing for those who want to celebrate that classic gaming aesthetic!

Why 1991 matters to your business today

When we look back at the milestones of 1991, we see the foundations of the modern world. The World Wide Web gave us a way to connect; Linux gave us a stable platform; PGP gave us security; and Adobe gave us the tools to create.

At ABC Service, our goal is to help you navigate this legacy. We take these complex technologies and make them work for your specific needs, whether that’s through fast, reliable computer repairs in our Tavistock workshop or providing high-quality printing services that help your brand stand out across the UK.

As a responsible local partner, we believe that understanding where our tech comes from helps us better prepare for where it’s going. The spirit of 1991 was about breaking down barriers and connecting people: a mission we carry on today through our friendly, non-call-centre service.
